What can I use Coconut Oil for?


Coconut Oil has a vast variety of uses. We have summarised only a few of these below.
  • Cooking*: Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is the healthiest oil to cook with. Coconut oil, being a highly saturated fat, is the least vulnerable of all the dietary oils to oxidation and free-radical formation and therefore is the safest to use in cooking. In addition, since it is composed primarily of MCFAs, it is not like the LCFAs that raise blood cholesterol levels. And unlike almost all saturated and unsaturated oils, it does not promote the platelet stickiness that leads to blood clot formation. Use extra virgin coconut oil in your daily cooking just as you would any other oil.

  • Digestion: Coconut Oil is very soothing to the digestive tract and very easy to digest. It kick starts the body in repairing itself, and you can say you are essentially turning back the time when you are consuming the oil. Did you know that Coconut Oil is used in hospitals to feed patients who have digestive or malabsorption problems? It is commonly given to infants and small children who cannot digest other fats. Coconut oil protects against heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many degenerative illnesses, this is why Coconut Oil is very good for people with Crohn’s Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, people who have had their gall bladder removed, the list is endless.

  • Weight Control*: Coconut oil is unique among oils in that it promotes weight loss, which has earned it the reputation of being the world’s only low-calorie fat. Most fats in our foods, if not used immediately as an energy source, are stored as fat tissue on our bodies. Coconut oil, being composed primarily of medium-and short-chain fatty acids, has a totally different effect on the body from that of the typical long-chain fatty acids (both saturated and unsaturated) found abundantly in meat and vegetable oils. Medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are broken down and used predominately for energy production and thus seldom end up as body fat or as deposits in arteries or anywhere else. They produce energy, not fat.

  • Colon Health (Constipation, Colon Cancer, Colitis, Crohn’s disease, IBS)*: From the mouth to your rectum, Coconut Oil and meat repair, rejuvenate, clean and revitalise the digestive system. Coconuts clean, polishes, strengthens and feeds tissues. It helps to improve the tone of intestinal muscles and balances your pH levels. Therefore, all problems associated with the colon can be aided by the consumption of both coconut oil and meat.

  • Acne & Pimples: After washing your face with soap and water – we suggest using the Dr Bronner Soaps (available from our online shop), apply a thin a thin layer of coconut oil and massage it into the skin. Do this every morning. Complexion may get worse at first as the toxins are being expelled from the skin, but will improve in a few weeks with continued application.

  • 100% Natural Make up remover: Firstly wash your face with a natural cleanser (view our online shop to see our range of organic liquid soaps and bars). Then check if your coconut oil is in its liquefied form, if it is simply place a cotton wool ball or cotton pad into the oil and remove your excess makeup as you normally would (This works particularly well with eye makeup. However, if the coconut oil has solidified, simply place some coconut oil in a small bowl and place the bowl in hot water so the oil liquefies. Then get a cotton wool ball or cotton pad and remove your makeup. The coconut oil leaves your skin feeling moisturised and clean at the same time. No more chemicals on your eyes and face!

  • Hair Conditioning Treatment: There are several ways you can use coconut oil as a hair conditioning treatment. For frequent use: You can use a couple of teaspoons of warm coconut oil and massage in your hair before bed and then rinse out in the morning. For deep hair conditioning treatment: Put a little more than a few teaspoons through your hair and leave in for approximately an hour and you can choose to cover your hair with a shower cap or just leave it and then shampoo and rinse out.

  • Skin Moisturiser: 100% natural skin moisturiser. Coconut oil is the best natural skin lotion available as it prevents free radical formation and the damage it causes. Be careful not to apply too much coconut oil as the oil will only sit on the surface of the skin and as such will not be soaked into your skin properly.

  • Reduces Cellulite: Massage coconut oil into your problematic area everyday to reduce the sight of cellulite.

  • Reduces Stretchmarks: Coconut oil is a 100% natural alternative for expecting mothers to use in place of man-made moisturisers which contain unnatural chemicals. Expecting mothers can massage the oil into their abdomen daily to ease childbirth and to prevent unsightly stretch marks. After delivery, the oil should be applied to tender areas to speed healing, and massaged on the breasts to soothe pain caused by nursing.

  • Reduces Wrinkles: Massage Coconut oil into the skin once or twice a day. Careful not to rub too much in at a time or your skin will look oily and won’t be absorbed into your skin.

  • Skin Conditions: Coconut oil helps with reducing Eczema, Psoriasis, fungal infections etc. As coconut oil has an anti-inflammatory effect.

  • Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids often occur when there is constipation, so keep regular by eating high fibre foods. Coconuts are a great source of fibre, for example, one cup of dried, shredded coconut supplies 9 grams of fibre. This is three to four times as much as most fruits and vegetables. Gently massage coconut oil into affected area 4-6 times daily. Eat at least 3 Tablespoons of oil a day until relief is achieved

  • Sore Aches and Pains: Massage the coconut oil into the affected area. Work the oil into the skin and muscles to stimulate circulation. If the Coconut oil is not in a liquid state, warm the oil so it is easy to work in.

  • Head Lice and Nits*: Massage a little coconut oil into the scalp and hair. Use just enough to barely coat the hair, not to make it oily. Comb through the hair with a fine-tooth comb. Pull the comb from the scalp to the ends of the hair. Rinse off any lice in the comb and continue. Comb through the hair at least twice. After combing, shampoo the hair thoroughly making sure to scrub behind the ears and at the back of the neck as this is where lice are most often found. Dry the hair. Apply a liberal amount of coconut oil or coconut milk and massage it deep into the scalp and hair. Keep the oil in the hair for as long as possible, at least 12 hours. Apply more oil or milk as necessary to keep scalp moist. If you do it at night, wear a shower cap to bed. Comb through the hair again and remove any lice you find. Most should be dead or gone by now. Shampoo the hair. Generally this regimen is enough to get rid of the lice. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • Massage Oil: Simply use in place of your other massage oils. Coconut oil rejuvenates the skin as the high content of MCFA’s are a good source of food for skin cells. Also coconut oil does not stain your clothes or sheets as much as other oils

  • Sensual Oil: Coconut oil has been used in the Islands as a Natural lubricant for years. Coconut oil should be used with polyurethane condoms or a natural skin condom. Latex condoms are best avoided because coconut oil can dissolve the latex.


Quick guide on how to get your daily dosage:

The easiest way to get your daily dosage is to use in place of other oils for cooking. You use it exactly the same as any other oil. It is great for stir frying, frying, deep frying. You can put some in your cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, warm milk. It is also very healthy to use as a spread in place of margarine on toast. Use it as a moisturiser or you can simply eat it straight from the jar. It is also excellent for baking biscuits, cakes and muffins, making raw balls and other desserts. NOTE: Dr Bruce Fife a.k.a "Dr Coconut” recommends daily intake of up to 3 – 4 tablespoons of coconut oil. TheCocoHut highly recommends that you should gradually introduce coconut oil into your diet as it can cause a healing crisis (e.g start with a teaspoon a day and gradually increase your consumption).
