About Me / Why this Blog?

Posted on 03 July 2012

Hi, my name is Elizabeth, I'm in my mid twenties and I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease a couple of years ago. I'm writing this blog because I wanted to share my personal journey with others and to shed light on what I've been going through over the past few years. Some of you are thinking...What is Crohn's Disease?...Well, it is an inflammatory bowel disease. It most commonly affects the lower small intestine (ileum) and the large intestine (colon), but may involve any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends through the entire thickness of the bowel wall. Basically, if I cut to the chase, there are many uncomfortable symptoms that come with this disease. My intestines were extremely inflamed, lined with lots and lots of ulcers, my stomach was bloated and felt like I had a bunch of knives wedged into my gut, I had constant diarrhoea, my stomach was always making loud weird noises all the time trying to digesting food, I never had any energy (because I wasn't absorbing any minerals and nutrients), my eyes were inflamed which made my vision weird and blurry, and at my worst stage I felt like I was fading away to a shadow because I lost too much weight.......and these were only SOME of my many delightful symptoms I had. Along with these symptoms I was also anaemic, had a lot of vitamin deficiencies, iron deficiency, my magnesium and zinc levels were down, I was dehydrated and I felt tired and had no energy - this Crohn's Disease was making me one sick person!

So what did the doctors tell me? They said that there is no cure for Crohn's Disease and gave me a prescription of hard core steroid drugs which I had to take EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE! .....Now this obviously wasn't the best news I've ever had.........so I asked my doctor and specialist what I should or shouldn't be eating on a daily basis, as I figured since I had something majorly wrong with my digestive tract that I should be very careful on what I ate. This was the response I got:

My Doctor's response (General Practitioner): "It's different for everybody, you just need to experiment to see if there are any foods that trigger your symptoms and make it worse. But, make sure you take the medication I prescribe you, it is very important, you have to take this medicine".

My Specialists response (Gastroenterologist): "Food doesn't play any role in this condition whatsoever. It doesn't matter if you are a devoted vegetarian or if you are a couch potato and eat junk all day, you have Crohn's Disease and if you don't take the medicine prescribed I will most likely be seeing you back in my office talking about surgically removing part of your intestine sometime in the near future". My response to my specialist (in a very confused voice): "I don't understand how you can tell me I have a disease which affects my digestive tract and what I eat doesn't make ANY difference?".

......hmmmmmm

So I started taking the prescribed 'Crohn's Disease' Medication and it didn't make me feel any better or change any of my symptoms. I started to research the side effects of the drugs (medication) I was prescribed and as a result I decided that I wanted to take a different (natural) approach to my disease.

After being told by doctors and specialists that "food doesn't matter?, "food won't change your condition". I thought that was total nonsense, and didn't understand how the food that I digested did not matter when I had a 'bowel disease!'. So I started doing my own research into food and diet and trialing and experimenting with different foods. I just knew in my gut (pun not intended) that the food I was eating had to make a difference to my bowel disease. It didn't take long to find out that FOOD DOES MATTER! In researching I stumbled across Coconut Oil and Coconut Water and it changed my life! Along with eating a healthy diet following the SCD/GAPS Diet and consuming coconut oil, coconut water and other coconut products, I am medication free and have not had any attacks or any Crohn's related symptoms since I was on my Crohn's medication 2 years ago! There may be some skeptics out there that will think I'm just in a remission stage but if they would just open their mind up to possibilities beyond what our society says and do research into alternative treatment than they would just be as excited as I am today about my health. Consuming coconut products everyday has led to so many positive changes to my health, both internally and externally. Coconut water, meat and oil is easy to digest and is very soothing to my digestive tract. Coconuts are helping my entire digestive system to heal! Coconuts are truly amazing and they have changed my life! I HAVE CURED MY CROHN'S DISEASE!

So why did I go down the natural (drug free) path?

1. I didn't want to be ingesting those 'hard core steroid drugs' for the rest of my life.

2. Western (Modern) Medicine told me that there is no cure for my disease. So why not try something if you are given a dead end?

3. I researched information about the drugs I was being prescribed and decided I didn't want to take them because they took AT LEAST 3 MONTHS before you could even start to notice anything and they had A LOT of side effect symptoms that could result from taking the medication. Guess what one of the side effects were on the list??...... DIARRHOEA! Umm.........HELLO!.....Isn't that what I'm trying to stop?!

So WHAT DID I DO to change my life around?

1. I did a lot of reading and these are the books which changed my life forever:

  • The Coconut Oil Miracle By Bruce Fife
  • Coconut Water for Health and Healing By Bruce Fife
  • Coconut Cures By Bruce Fife
  • Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride (Explains the GAPS diet)
  • Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall (Explains SCD diet)

2. Changed my diet. I follow the SCD/GAPS Diet and consume Coconut Oil, Coconut Water and other Coconut Products EVERYDAY. I am eating yummy, delicious, nutritious food all day everyday!

3. Discovered Coconut Products and their many amazing health benefits and I can't get enough of them! (Be careful – not all coconut products are 'natural', 'healthy' and good quality.

4. Swapped my personal care and household items to natural, non-toxic and chemical free. This gave my body the chance to heal, as I was in total toxic overload and my body wouldn't have been able to heal if it kept being bombarded with the nasty chemicals from a lot of mainstream products.

5. Surrounded myself with only positive and happy people (my close family and friends)

Ok, so it's been tough taking the natural route BUT it's been SO WORTH IT! It's hard to sum up the events quickly like this in a blog but I want to say a big THANK YOU to some AMAZING PEOPLE that have HELPED ME, SUPPORTED ME, INSPIRED ME and GIVEN ME HOPE that there IS something I CAN DO to help MY DISEASE.
