What is the difference between Coconut Water, Coconut Milk and Coconut Cream?

I've had a lot of people asking me questions about the differences between these so I thought it would be easiest to write a blog about it!

Coconut Water, Coconut Milk and Coconut Cream all naturally come from coconuts =)

If consuming them in their natural state with no preservatives etc then they are very healthy for you to consume!

Coconut Water

What is it? Coconut water is the liquid inside a coconut. It develops naturally inside the coconut. Coconut water is also sometimes referred to as Coconut Juice and both names mean the same thing - (the fresh liquid from the coconut). Coconut Water looks like clear water with a slight cloudy appearance. The best coconut water should be from young green coconuts, as this is when the liquid inside the coconut is most nutritious. Fresh young green coconuts also have the most water! =)

Coconut water has long been the most popular beverage consumed in the tropics where it is considered not only a refreshing drink but a health tonic.

Coconut water is really healthy to consume. It is considered a super food filled with minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes, and natural growth hormones.

You can buy Fresh young coconuts from health food stores located in the refrigerator. They will not look green however, because in their natural state they are like the size of bowling balls! When they are imported the outer green shell has been chopped off so they do not take up so much storage. If you are lucky enough to go on holidays to a tropical location you will be able to buy them in their whole green natural state. The locals will cut out a hole in the top and you can drink it straight away – Yum!

If you can't buy fresh young coconuts I would recommend looking into different brands near where you live. They all have different packaging. I would not recommend coconut water packaged in a can (like coke is) because due to the packaging they have added sugar and preservatives to the drink because it will go off otherwise. Tetra Pak or Elo Pak are the only ones I drink and recommend as coconut water is hyper sensitive to light and so packing coconut water in a Tetra Pak or Elo Pak is the best way to pack coconut water, as the coconut water still thinks it's in a coconut! It also maintains the taste profile better than any other type of packaging for coconut water. In our Online Store you will find C Coconut Water which is packaged in a Tetra Pak.

How to use it:

You can drink Coconut water by itself, it is really hydrating and great to use before and after exercising! It really does quench your thirst!

You can also add it to smoothies or make cocktails.

Coconut Milk and Coconut Cream

What is it? Coconut Milk and Coconut Cream are a manufactured product made from the flesh of mature coconut meat (the white flesh of the brown coconuts). When coconuts are mature they have thicker hard white meat flesh. This white meat is grated.

The first pressing of the grated coconut meat is Coconut Cream– it is thick and it is pure coconut extract.

Coconut milk is the second or subsequent pressings and water is added in to extract more milk out of the grated coconut. Hence, why it is thinner in consistency. It looks like cow's milk (white in colour) hence the name Coconut Milk. It actually has nothing to do with it being a dairy product. It is totally dairy free =)

I only consume Ayam Premium Coconut Milk and Ayam Premium Coconut Cream as they are 100% natural with nothing added (no preservatives and guar gum etc). It is processed and canned within 48 hours of harvest. Ayam do have an organic Coconut range and a light coconut range but they have stuff added. Only their Premium range is pure.

Note: The cream that rises to the top of a can of coconut milk is also considered coconut cream.

There are many different brands of coconut milk and cream available. Most brands add guar gum or xanthan gum to reduce separation. This is totally unnecessary! There is no need for these unnatural things to be added! Companies only add these things in because people think it looks nicer when you open it up and it's looking all perfect and hasn't separated.

Personally I don't like to consume preservatives and unnatural things in my system as it causes a whole bunch of problems! So the healthier alternative is to find a brand that does not add anything to it!

How to use it:

You can use Coconut Milk as a Dairy Milk substitute. You can use it in breakfast meals, desserts, smoothies, a wide variety of different beverages, making yoghurt, ice-cream sticks, curries.

Some common misconceptions about coconut milk and coconut cream is that it is fattening.

The saturated fat encased in coconut milk and cream is actually healthy good fat that your body can easily metabolize and turn into energy fast, without raising your blood cholesterol level and adding to your weight. In other words, it doesn't transform into bad cholesterol that may clog up your arteries. So don't worry. Besides, the principal saturated fat, or fatty acid, in coconut milk and cream is lauric acid, the same type of saturated fat found in abundance in human breast milk.

A lot of people want to go for the light coconut milk or cream option. However, what they don't realise is you can easily add water to the premium natural good coconut milk and coconut cream and this will make it less rich and hence make it light. If you have a look at the ingredients listed on products already labelled light it means it's full of other bad unnatural stuff (preservatives etc) that your body just doesn't need!
